history

The Institute for Literary Research was founded in 1948 by order of the Council of Ministers as an independent institute that was initially subordinate to the Minister of Education and shortly thereafter to the Minister of Universities and Science. The initiator for the establishment of the institute was the member of the Sejm and editor-in-chief of the magazine Kuźnica Stefan Żółkiewski . In 1952 the institute became part of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The institute originally comprised the facilities for Polish literary history, literary theory and literary scientific methodology, bibliography and a work center for school books on Polish literary history. However, the specialist cabinet was dissolved again early and the facility for Polish literary history was subdivided into the individual literary epochs. The facility for literary theory and literary scientific methodology was replaced by the work center for historical and theoretical poetics and the facility for bibliography with the work centers for Old Polish Documentation, the Work Center for Documentation of the Literature of the 20th Century and the Work Center for Current Bibliography. The department for folk literature was added in 1953 and remained as a job until 1993.

Up until the 1960s, teaching was limited to awarding academic degrees. In the period from 1948 to 2010 , a total of 257 people completed their doctorates and 116 completed their habilitation . A doctoral degree was also offered from 1966 to 1998 .
