Jan Kasprowicz (born December 12, 1860 in Szymborze near Inowrocław , Kingdom of Prussia , † August 1, 1926 in Poronin near Zakopane ) was a Polish writer , poet, literary translator and university teacher.

Life

After high schools in Ratibor and Posen , he studied philology and philosophy in Leipzig and Breslau. In 1885 he published his first poems, worked as a journalist, received his doctorate in 1904 and in 1908 was given the chair for comparative literary history at the University of Lemberg , where he was rector from 1921–1922.

Kasprowicz belonged to the circle of poets of the Young Poland and wrote form-conscious, expressive poems. He translated works by Shakespeare , Byron , Goethe , Schiller and others into Polish.
