Damazy Kotowski (born December 8, 1861 in Petrikau , † August 16, 1943 in Posen ) was a Polish painter .

Life

Damazy Kotowski studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow between 1885 and 1890 , where he was a student of the Polish history painter Jan Matejko . During his studies he also completed a stay abroad at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Sándor Wagner . From 1888 he exhibited his work for the first time in Krakow with the help of the local Society of Friends of the Fine Arts . Further exhibitions followed in Warsaw , Lviv and abroad. His paintings he signed at the beginning only with Damazy K . He did not use his full name until 1893. In 1894 there was finally a collaboration with the painters Włodzimierz Tetmajer and Ludwik Stasiak to create a diorama . In 1895 he painted an allegorical fresco for the vestibule of the Lviv Opera House .

In 1915 Kotowski joined the Polish legions in the course of the First World War , which fought against troops of the Russian Empire in Galicia and the Carpathian Mountains . He was wounded in the course of his assignment and spent the rest of the time doing illustrations for the newspapers and calendars of the military press. After regaining Polish independence and the end of the Polish-Soviet War , he finally settled in Poznan in 1926 . Kotowski died there in 1943 during the occupation of Poland by the Wehrmacht in the course of the Second World War .

Kotowski mainly worked as a fresco painter and decorator. He also restored apartments and gave drawing lessons to support himself. His predominantly impressionistic pastel and oil paintings can be attributed to genre painting . His most famous works include the portrait of the Polish writer Jan Kasprowicz and the artistic exploration of the culture of the Hutsuls .
