The Henschel type Essen tank locomotives were built as industrial locomotives by the Henschel locomotive factory in Kassel .

Their areas of application were particularly industrial railways. Private railways such as the Süddeutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft and the Kassel-Naumburger Eisenbahn also purchased these industrial locomotives from Kassel. After 1945 two locomotives came to the Deutsche Reichsbahn and were designated as 92 6584 and 6585 . The locomotives were in service until around 1970. A locomotive has been preserved at the Eisenbahnfreunde Breisgau .

History and technology

The locomotives come from an extensive range of tank locomotives for industrial and private railways from Henschel in Kassel, from B-coupled locomotives with around 350 hp to E-couplers with around 800 hp. To achieve a low susceptibility to failure, they were built as wet steam locomotives. The Essen type was the most powerful D-coupled locomotive with an output of around 600 hp.

Some locomotives were converted to superheated steam , like the preserved SEG 384 . A tow load diagram was set up for the Weserbergland steam railway . The locomotive was able to carry a load of 500 t at a speed of 11 km / h on an incline of 20 ‰.

commitment

Most locomotives were used on industrial railways and replaced by diesel locomotives by the 1960s at the latest.

The following assignments took place at private railways:

Southern German Railway Company SEG 384–386

The Süddeutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft purchased three locomotives in 1927 and named them SEG 384 - 386 . They were initially used on the Kaiserstuhlbahn . The 386 was handed over to the Ilmenau-Großbreitenbacher Eisenbahn in 1927 , and the 385 followed in 1943. As a result, both locomotives were taken over by the Deutsche Reichsbahn after the Second World War and designated as 92 6584 and 6585 . They were scrapped in 1967 and 1968.

The locomotive 384 was used by various companies in West Germany, whereby it kept its ancestral number. In 1969 it was taken over as a museum locomotive by the Eisenbahnfreunde Breisgau . The last database entry about the locomotive comes from 1990.

Essen coal mines

The locomotive with the serial number 23.897 was sold to the Essen coal mines in 1938 and was used in the Monopol ( Bergkamen ) and Königsborn ( Bönen ) collieries . From there it was passed on to Ruhrkohle AG and received the number D-776 . It was purchased in 1977 at the scrap price of the Weserbergland steam railways and transferred to Rinteln . It was used in front of museum trains until the end of 1977. During the following main repair, the locomotive passed the water pressure test without any problems, and several heating pipes burst due to material fatigue when heating up. So it was turned off. The locomotive was still in service with the Weserbergland steam railway in 2008 , the whereabouts of the locomotive are not known.

Kassel-Naumburg Railway KN 7

The locomotive with the serial number 22.501 came brand new to the Kassel-Naumburg Railway in 1935 and was given the number KN 7 . It was passed on to the Farge-Vegesacker Railway in 1949 . First it was number 202 , then it was number 90 of the Deutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft . The locomotive had been parked since 1960 and was scrapped in 1963.
