Herakleios (son of Constans II)
Herakleios ( Middle Greek Ἡράκλειος , Latin Heraclius ; * around 655 probably in Constantinople ; † after 681) was co-emperor of the Byzantine Empire from 659 to 681 .
Life
Herakleios was the second son of the emperor Constans II and probably Fausta . Together with his younger brother Tiberios , he became co-emperor in 659; his older brother Constantine IV had already received the rank of basileus five years earlier . When Konstans II wanted him to come to Syracuse with his brothers and their mother in 663, the inhabitants of Constantinople prevented this.
Herakleios and Tiberios also remained in office and dignity as co-emperors under Constantine IV until they were deposed in 681 for unclear reasons, probably in connection with the Third Council of Constantinople . Constantine IV had their noses cut off in order to disqualify them for the imperial dignity according to the custom of the time and thus secure his sole rule and the succession to the throne of his son Justinian II (who suffered the same fate in 695).
