Herbert Nicholas "Herb" Francis (born May 26, 1940 in Miami , † September 20, 1988 in New York City ) was an American cyclist . He was the first African American cyclist to compete for the United States in the Olympics .

Athletic career

When Herb Francis was eight years old, his family moved to New York , where they lived in Harlem . There he later started cycling. Nye: "[...] Francis was big and muscular, but amazingly catlike and quick. Frances was considered one of the fastest one-sprint cyclists on the racing circuit. "

In 1960 Herb Francis was nominated together with Jack Simes for the Olympic Games in Rome . He was eliminated in the first lap rebound , Simes as well. Then he and his friend Perry Metzler supported the cyclist Oliver Martin before he took part in the 1964 Olympic Games .
