Herb Lubalin

Herbert (Herb) Frederick Lubalin (born March 17, 1918 in New York City ; † May 24, 1981 there ) was an American graphic designer and an important type designer of the 1960s and 1970s . He was a co-founder of the International Typeface Corporation (ITC).

biography

After studying at the private Cooper Union University in New York from 1936–39 and participating in the 1939 World's Fair in New York, it was not easy for Herb Lubalin to find suitable employment. In the 1940s he worked first at "Reiss Advertising" and later at Sudler & Hennessey. Here he met the designer George Lois (born 1939), the designer John Pistilli (1925–2003) and the art and fashion photographer Art Kane (1925–1995) and worked with them. For a while he worked here as art director and later as an executive at various other New York advertising agencies such as Deutsch & Shea , Fairchild Publications and the like. a active.

In 1964 he founded his own agency, Lubalin Inc. , which he worked with various partners until 1969. a. Tom Carnase (born 1939) and Alan Peckolick (1940-2017) - continued. During this time he also designed a series of magazines for Ralph Ginzburg (1929–2006). From 1969, the agency called Lubalin, Smith & Carnase Inc . In this new agency he published another magazine called “Fact”. The editor-in-chief was Warren Boroson (born 1939). This magazine got into trouble with the publication of an article about the Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater (1909-1998) with the title "The Subconscious of a Conservative". Goldwater then sued the magazine several times until it had to be discontinued. Thereupon Lubalin and Ginzburg published a new magazine called “Avant Garde”.

Herb Lubalin founded the International Typeface Corporation (ITC) together with Aaron Burns in 1970 with the aim of making fonts accessible to everyone regardless of the typesetting system . Since 1973 he has published the ITC in-house magazine Upper and Lower Case (U & lc). From 1972 onwards, in addition to his work as a publisher, he also carried out teaching assignments at Cornell University and the Cooper Union in New York.

Lubalin was awarded numerous prizes and participated in many international exhibitions. He had various teaching positions, including a. from 1972 at Cornell University and at Cooper Union in New York.
