Avant Garde (font)
Avant Garde is a typeface designed by graphic designer Herb Lubalin . The font is one of the most famous fonts of the 1970s.
History and use
Originally only designed as a logo for the New York culture magazine of the same name, the lettering was later expanded into a font. The font designers Ed Benguiat , André Gürtler , Erich Gschwind and Christian Mengelt designed other styles and variants . Due to its unusual, novel shape, the font was widely used around the world. The font is characterized by its geometric shapes and unusual ligatures . The widespread use without the corresponding licensing subsequently led to the establishment of the International Typeface Corporation .
In the choice of the 100 best fonts in the FontShop , the font landed in 23rd place. The font is used by adidas and the Weilrod loudspeaker manufacturer Canton Elektronik for the logo; the Canton logo was designed by Christof Gassner . In the artwork of the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 Avant Garde was named for the motto “Feel your heart beat! (in German. Feel your heartbeat!) ”was chosen.
