Herbert Berger (writer, 1919)

Herbert Berger (born March 12, 1919 in Świebodzice / Silesia, † April 23, 1992 in Warendorf ) was a German writer and miner.

life and work

Born in Silesia, Berger first completed elementary school, labor and military service. Front operations in World War II shaped him. From 1945 to 1950 he worked in various professions in East Germany. In 1951 he came to Ahlen , where he worked as a miner until 1975. In retirement he lived in Hoetmar until his death .

Berger has been an author since 1952. He wrote short prose, short stories, occasionally poems and radio plays, sometimes together with his wife Martha Berger. He was a typical working class poet and wrote in simple and straightforward language. Most of his publications revolve around the lives of miners and their families.

Berger was a member of the Association of German Writers .

  • 1976: Literature Prize of the Association for Youth and Business, Zurich
  • 1979: Altenkirchen Poetry Prize
  • Scholarship from the Ministry of Culture of North Rhine-Westphalia
  • Awards at the storytelling and radio play award of the East German Cultural Council and the NRW Minister of Social Affairs
