Herbert Brüning

Herbert Gustav Rudolf Alfred Brüning (born October 4, 1911 in Magdeburg ; † May 25, 1983 ) was a German geographer, museum director and university professor.

Life

After attending high school in Magdeburg, he studied geology, zoology and geography at the University of Göttingen from 1931, in 1933 he moved to Berlin and in the same year to Munich. Thereupon he went to the University of Halle-Wittenberg in 1934, he did his doctorate in 1937 with Otto Schlueter with the dissertation economic geography of the upper Bavarian forest .

He got his first job in 1938 as an assistant to Johannes Weigelt at the Geological-Palaeontological Institute of the University of Halle-Wittenberg. A year later he went to Alfred Bogen at the Museum of Natural History and Prehistory in Magdeburg . In 1940 he was called up for military service and worked as a military geologist.

After the end of the Second World War, Herbert Brüning returned to Magdeburg, where he was hired again as a museum employee. In 1951, at the age of 40, he took over the post of director of the Museum of Cultural History . From 1954 he also worked as a district nature conservation officer for the city of Magdeburg.

In 1955 he was arrested for political reasons. In the following year he was rehabilitated and fled from the GDR to Hanover . In 1963 he became director of the Natural History Museum in Mainz and one year later he was appointed lecturer at the Philosophical Faculty of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz with a teaching assignment for regional studies in Central and Eastern Germany. Herbert Brüning was an honorary professor in Mainz from 1966 until his death in 1983.
