Herbert G. Luft
Herbert G. Luft (born August 21, 1907 in Essen , † January 13, 1992 in Los Angeles ) was a German - American journalist and film producer .
Life
Herbert G. Luft, the son of a Jewish businessman, was arrested on November 9, 1938 during the “ Reichspogromnacht ” and taken to the Dachau concentration camp . From there he came with the help of his wife Josefine "Pepi" Luft, geb. Fire, free again after a few months. American relatives of Pepis made it possible for Luft to flee to England in 1939 and from there to the USA in 1940 . Pepi Luft was only able to leave Germany in 1941. In Des Moines ( Iowa ) air began to work as a journalist, where he u. a. Published reports on his experiences in Germany . In 1944, the couple went to Hollywood , where Luft began a career as a film critic . As a Hollywood correspondent, he soon served around 100 newspapers around the world. He later became known as a film historian , screenwriter and film editor .
Luft worked for Hollywood for more than 30 years. From 1950 he produced numerous feature films, in which he often worked on the script . His best-known film in German-speaking countries was Zeppelin (1970, with Michael York and Elke Sommer ). He produced the film for the Getty Picture Corporation , for which he worked for 20 years and whose vice president he eventually became. Publicist and in (not filmed) scripts, he dealt with the Holocaust long after the war . His estate was indexed and archived by Josefine Luft († 1997) and is now kept by the American Heritage Center of the University of Wyoming .
