Live and act

After graduating from high school in Feldkirch , he decided, encouraged by the Bishop of Basel, to pursue a university career with a focus on the Old Testament. In October 1934 he entered the Collegium Germanicum to study philosophy and theology. After three years of studying philosophy and two years of theology, he moved prematurely in the summer of 1939 to the Institut Catholique in Paris , graduated from theology and studied Hittite and Arabic. He remained a candidate for the priesthood for the diocese of Basel , on March 23, 1940 he was ordained a priest by Cardinal Jean Verdier in Paris.

In 1942, Haag received his doctorate from the Dutchman Marc-Anton van den Oudenrijn (1890–1962) at the University of Friborg (Switzerland) . He then went to pastoral care as a vicar at the Franciscan Church in Lucerne . Here he took part in the Christian-Jewish dialogue after the end of the war. From autumn 1948 to 1960 he taught the Old Testament at the Lucerne Theological Faculty, and from 1960 to 1980 he held the chair for the Old Testament at the Catholic theological faculty at the University of Tübingen .

Haag was known in particular as a biblical scholar and exegete , among other things he published a biblical dictionary. His critical positions on parts of the doctrine, such as B. the original sin , and the priesthood found the contradiction of the church leadership. His Tübingen colleague Hans Küng was one of Haag's close friends .

In 1985 the Herbert Haag Foundation for Freedom in the Church was founded, which awards the Herbert Haag Prize .
