The defensive player, who was mostly used as a right defender in the then predominantly practiced World Cup system , was appointed by the DFB to two appearances in the national B team in 1955 .

career

Amateur and start in the Oberliga West

Herbert Hofmann gained his first experience in the senior senior division at 1. FC Lichtenfels in the Bayern League . With the team from Upper Franconia , he took 3rd place in the 1950/51 season and drew attention to himself with his performance in the Oberliga West, Schwarz-Weiß Essen. The team from the Grugastadt signed the man from Lichtenfels for the 1951/52 season. But there were also goalkeepers Hans Ricker, Karl-Heinz Höger and the other field players Horst Büttner, Helmut Hasse and returnees Kurt Zaro to ETB at the Uhlenkrug. The team around the top performers Heinz Gommans and Hans Zerres finished 11th under coach Richard Longin and Hofmann had scored ten goals in 28 league games. He was still a center forward at SW Essen. Behind Zerres with 12 goals, he finished second in the internal goalscorer list.

After just one round, he accepted Fortuna Düsseldorf's offer for the 1952/53 season and moved to the team around goalkeeper Anton Turek and Olympian Matthias Mauritz in the working-class district of Flingern. The team of trainer Heinrich Körner had strengthened itself with the twins Karl and Martin Gramminger from VfL Neckarau, but Fortuna did not get past ninth place. Hofmann had scored five goals in 15 league appearances. Since both sides were not completely satisfied with the 1952/53 season, Hofmann moved to the Oberliga Nord and signed a contract with Eintracht Braunschweig from the 1953/54 season.

Eintracht Braunschweig, 1953 to 1958

On the start of the round, August 9, 1953, with a 1-0 away win at Harburger TB, he made his debut with the blue-yellow of the BTSV in the Oberliga Nord. He was still on as a center forward and was the scorer of the winning goal. But already in the 2-1 home win against Hamburger SV on October 4, 1953, he ran under coach Edmund Conen as a right defender. This should then be his undisputed regular position in the next few years with the team from the stadium on Hamburger Straße . Outstanding for Hofmann was also in his first round in Braunschweig, the 2-0 away win on February 14, 1954, at the eventual German champions Hannover 96. Werner Ruppel and Heinz Güttgemanns were further newcomers to Eintracht in this round. Hofmann made 25 league appearances (1 goal) and Braunschweig finished fourth at the end of the round. In his second round with the blue and yellow he increased his number of games to 28 league games and the Eintracht took sixth place in 1954/55. The newcomers Heinz Patzig and Karl-Heinz Hellwig also contributed to this . In Edmund Conen's last coaching year, 1955/56, Braunschweig fell back to 11th place, Hofmann had played in 29 of 30 league games.

In the debut year of the new coach Kurt Baluses , 1956/57, Hofmann and colleagues came back to a single-digit position in the table, the Eintracht took seventh place with the newcomers Hans Jäcker and Erwin Bruske. The home game against the northern series champions Hamburger SV was won 3-2 on September 23, 1956; In the second leg, the Rautträger returned the favor with a 7-2 home win. The 1957/58 round was a great success for Eintracht: With 41:19 points, the Baluse team reached the runner-up . The two goalscorers Werner Thamm (23 goals) and Ernst-Otto Meyer (22 goals) played a major role in this. At the end of the round, Hamburger SV was only two points ahead of Braunschweig as champions. The catch-up game against Hamburger SV in Bremen on December 26th, 1957 achieved an outstanding result: despite a 4-0 lead at half-time in Braunschweig, HSV won the top game 6: 4. Hofmann formed the defender couple with Justus Eccarius . Hofmann played his last league game on February 9, 1958 in a 3-0 home win against VfR Neumünster. After the 23rd round game the round was over for him; he no longer took part in the group matches in the final round of the German soccer championship against Schalke 04, Karlsruher SC and Tennis Borussia Berlin. After a total of 130 league appearances (1 goal), Herbert “Charly” Hofmann's career ended in the summer of 1958 at Eintracht Braunschweig.

Selection appointments

On March 13, 1955, Hofmann won 2-0 with Braunschweig at Arminia Hannover, on March 23, the Eintracht defender was in the German B national team, who managed a 1-1 draw against the English professionals in Sheffield. In front of goalkeeper Heinz Kubsch , he and Erich Juskowiak formed the defenders pair . While the debut in the B-Elf was accompanied by a respectable performance, the second mission, on the other hand, was subject to a completely negative sign: On September 25, 1955, Hofmann was substituted on in Laibach after a depressing 8-0 defeat against Yugoslavia. Center forward Uwe Seeler did not spoil his great career, but club colleague Horst Schnoor ruined his career in the senior national team. Hofmann was also no longer used in the DFB selection.
