Heinrich "Heinz" Körner originally Heinrich Krczal (born July 2, 1893 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary ; † December 8, 1961 ), also known as "Doctor", was an Austrian football player and coach .

Player career

societies

Born as Heinrich Krczal, the small player joined SK Rapid Wien at the age of 14 and received the nickname by which he was to be known during his playing career on the first day. The Wiener Sport-Tagblatt wrote many years later:

“Little Krczal is said to have appeared on the day of his entry with a roasted dress, which he must have tacitly borrowed from his papa, because the tails dragged him backwards on the floor as he walked, which gave his entire appearance an elegant and learned impression . That's why the loose crowd called him Doctor , and this nickname has stayed with him (...) to this day. "

About the youth team he soon came into the reserve and after the end of the career of left winger Ferdinand Wolf also into the fighting team. There he formed the left attacking side with Leopold Grundwald , with the powerful goby and the technically skilled doctor complementing each other perfectly. When the first championship title was played out in 1911/12, the two of them were instrumental in ensuring that the Hütteldorfer won the title in the end, which was followed by the next in the next season. The winger's special virtues included handling the ball and understanding the game, as well as the fact that, despite his physical inferiority, he left considerably stronger defenders behind.

Krczal was a regular player until the outbreak of war and only played sporadically for the Green and White during the war years before he regularly took his place in the assault line again. During these years three more championship titles were won. In 1919 the player who was most recently used as a center forward lost his place in the first team due to the oversupply of strikers. Since he did not want to be satisfied with a place in the reserve, he switched to Wiener Amateur SV and at that time also took the name Körner . In Ober Sankt Veit , however, he only stayed a few months and returned to Rapid during the season, where he won two more championship titles and one cup victory.

National team

He made his debut for the senior national team on June 15, 1913 in Vienna in a 2-0 win over Italy and was part of the team until the war began. In 1918 he came back to the team and played his last of seven international matches on May 9 in a 5-1 win against the Swiss team .

Coaching career

After his active career, he took up the coaching career in 1921 and worked here mainly in Germany, where he became known as Heinz Körner. After initial positions at Union Gelsenkirchen and the Stuttgarter Kickers, as well as at Fola Esch in Luxembourg , he became a player-coach at Wiener AF in 1923 , which disappeared into second division in 1924.

The club with which his coaching career is most closely connected is Fortuna Düsseldorf , where he took over the training for the first time in 1924 and led the team - after a brief interlude at 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the summer of 1925 - to their first win in the district championship in 1927, which finally also led to the first participation in the German championship. There they were eliminated in the first round against Hamburger SV . After leaving the club in 1928 and looking after Concordia Basel , among other things , he returned to Düsseldorf in 1931, where he led Fortuna to the greatest success in club history in 1933, winning the German championship when Schalke 04 were beaten 3-0 in the final .

In the mid-1930s, Körner worked in the Swiss professional league, where he was in charge of FC Basel , among other things , before he took over as coach at Bayern Munich for the 1937/38 season . After a stint at Union 02 Hamborn , he was in charge of Fortuna Düsseldorf for the fourth time. Although the Gauliga Niederrhein could be won twice , in the German championship the team was eliminated in the group stage. One last time he looked after the Rhinelander between 1951 and 1953 in the Oberliga West .

In addition, Körner worked as a trainer at Cologne BC , Rot-Weiß Oberhausen , SV Borussia Wuppertal , Rot-Weiss Essen and TuRU Düsseldorf . After his return to Austria, he worked as a sports teacher, was chairman of the Austrian sports teachers' association and was in charge of ESV Westbahn Linz , ASK Sparta Linz , E-Werk Wien and the second division club SV Wimpassing based in Wimpassing on the Leitha .
