Herbert Jones

Herbert Jones VC , OBE (born May 4, 1940 in London , † May 28, 1982 in the Falkland Islands ) was a British officer .

Career

After graduating from Eton College and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst , Jones became a lieutenant in the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment in 1960 (1962 first lieutenant, 1966 captain, 1972 major). In 1979 he became a lieutenant colonel in the Parachute Regiment , where in 1981 he became the commander of the 2nd Paratrooper Battalion (2 PARA).

Jones fell in the Falklands War when he personally led the assault on an Argentine position at Goose Green in a difficult position . For this he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross . Jones was buried in the Blue Beach Military Cemetery in San Carlos, East Falkland . His Victoria Cross is in the National Army Museum in London.
