Herbert Kittelmann

Herbert Kittelmann (born October 21, 1915 ; † January 12, 1982 in Naumburg ) was a German resistance fighter against fascism and an officer in the People's Police , the Ministry for State Security (MfS) and the East German NVA .

Life

As the son of a boilermaker, he attended elementary school and became a member of the KJVD in 1929 . After 1933 he was a KPD member of the resistance group around Otto Gotsche , which in 1942 merged with the illegal KPD organization Antifascist Workers' Group Central Germany in Eisleben led by Robert Büchner and was arrested.

After 1945 he was secretary of the KPD district leadership in Merseburg and in 1946, after the forced unification of the SPD and KPD, he became a member of the SED . In 1948 he joined the German People's Police , initially training in the main administration , then working in the Kasernierte Volkspolizei (KVP), most recently as head of the political department of the KVP readiness in Potsdam with the rank of lieutenant colonel. When the NVA was founded in 1956, he became deputy commander and head of the political department of the 1st Motorized Rifle Division (MSD) in Potsdam. In 1958, he moved to the Ministry for State Security as a senior officer , and until 1960 was acting head of the Potsdam district administration in place of Rudi Mittig and at the same time a member of the Potsdam SED district management. In 1960 he was again an officer of the NVA and was briefly head of the NVA cadet school in Naumburg (successor to Major General Paul Blechschmidt ). After its dissolution, from September 1, 1960, he was in command of the successor institution in Naumburg, the preparatory study faculty of the Friedrich Engels Military Academy , which was closed on August 30, 1965.

He last lived as a Colonel a. D. in Naumburg and died at the age of 66.

  • On March 1, 1986, the Chemical Defense 1 Battalion of the 1st MSD in Lehnitz was named after Herbert Kittelmann.
