Life

The son of a locksmith left school at the age of 15 to find a job with the film. In the autumn of 1932, Maris made her debut as Bert Schmidt-Maris - often in the wrong spelling Schmidt-M o ris - as a galley boy alongside Heinrich George in the boatman's drama Das Meer ruft . By 1941, he entered under this double name with an abundance of small roles as an apprentice, student, elevator operator, Barjunge, bellhop or Piccolo in numerous films and worked casually in 1937 for the first time as a manager . Drafted in 1941, Maris was transferred to the Reichsrundfunk and assigned to read out propaganda reports on the Italian ally's station.

After the war , Maris initially had a few problems getting back to film. His first guaranteed job is that of a production assistant on the 1954 film Phantom of the Big Tent . Since 1956 he has been able to work regularly as a unit manager again. The following year he met Marlon Brando while recording the German filming of the US war drama The Young Lions and became friends with him. Later he made closer contact with the actor couple Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor . In 1964 Herbert Maris founded Maris-Film GmbH, which made a number of films, especially at the end of the 1960s. His company went bankrupt as early as 1972, however, and it wasn't until the late 1970s that he found another opportunity to take part in the production of films as a production manager (in the service of Wolf C. Hartwig and Artur Brauner ). Later on, numerous health problems threw him off course. At the end of the 1980s, Herbert Maris briefly returned to the camera as a television actor alongside Günter Pfitzmann .

Herbert Maris was married three times, his last sign of life dates back to 2004.
