The Herbert Reichel company was a German textile company founded by Herbert Reichel (* 1920 in Hohenstein-Ernstthal ; † 1977 ).

history

Herbert Reichel founded his textile company in 1937 in the Sudetenland . The company manufactured decorative fabrics. After the invasion of the Red Army in 1945, the plants were relocated to Hohenstein-Ernstthal.

In view of the threat of expropriation, Herbert Reichel began building up production in Rheinberg in 1948 . Numerous employees came from Hohenstein-Ernstthal in Saxony. In addition to the factory premises, more than 1000 apartments were built for employees, the Reichel-Siedlung , which is now officially called the Rhineland-Siedlung .

In 1955 the company exhibited its products in an exhibition of German textiles and wallpapers in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In the 1960s the production of carpets and carpets was started. Herbert Reichel managed the company until 1976. He was Senator hc and member of the Düsseldorf / Krefeld Advisory Board of Deutsche Bank AG .

In 1975 the company received a government grant of 9.4 million  DM , the award of which was possibly connected with donations from Herbert Reichel to the FDP district associations in Düsseldorf and Wesel; Reichel is also said to have generously donated FDP leaders such as the then federal chairman Walter Scheel .

Until its demise in the 1980s, the plant in Rheinberg was Europe's largest plant for home textiles with 1,800 employees.

After the company was closed, it was temporarily the location of the US Army. Some halls later gave way to residential buildings, others are used by the Niederrhein Exhibition Center.
