Herbert Seifert (musicologist)

Herbert Seifert (* 1945 in Baden near Vienna ) is a retired Austrian musicologist and university professor at the University of Vienna .

life and work

Seifert studied from 1963 to 1970 at the University of Vienna . He took musicology as a major and theater studies as a minor and completed his dissertation with a thesis on Giovanni Buonaventura Viviani . At his training facility, the Vienna Institute for Musicology, he took on the function of a study assistant in 1966, became a university assistant in 1970, and later a university and senior assistant. In 1988 he became an assistant professor and an associate professor the following year. In 2010 he was retired, but continues to teach at his long-term place of work.

Seifert is the author of a number of books and essays, mostly on the music of the Austrian Baroque. For the Oesterreichische Musiklexikon he wrote monographic articles on the baroque composers Antonio Bertali , Carlo Farina and Alessandro Poglietti as well as the entries sonata , chamber sonata and sheet music . Seifert worked on the second edition of Alfred Planyavsky's standard work History of the Double Bass , which appeared in 1984. A collection of his lectures and essays on musical drama in the 17th and 18th centuries was published in 2014 by the Viennese publisher Hollitzer .
