Herbert Thiele (resistance fighter, 1907)

Herbert Thiele (born March 28, 1907 in Leipzig - Gohlis ; † August 29, 1940 in Buchenwald concentration camp ) was a German communist and resistance fighter against the Nazi regime .

Life

Thiele, born the son of an iron turner, attended elementary school until 1921 and then the Kühn trade school in Leipzig. After completing his commercial apprenticeship in 1924, he became unemployed.

Thiele was already politically active during his apprenticeship. In 1924 he became group leader of the Communist Youth Association of Germany (KJVD) in Gohlis- Eutritzsch . In 1928 he joined the Red Young Front, the youth organization of the Red Front Fighters League , and became head of the 10th Eutritzsch Department in this organization. In 1930 Thiele was elected organizational leader of the KPD local group north, and a year later he was elected political director of the local group south. Thiele was married and lived with his wife and their four children at Bornaische Strasse 75 in Connewitz .

After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists in 1933, Theile continued to work illegally for the KPD. The Gestapo searched the Thieles' houses several times. 1934 Thiele was eventually arrested and the Higher Regional Court Dresden to three years and five months prison convicted. He was imprisoned in Zwickau prison and in the Emsland camp Aschendorfermoor . After completing his sentence, Thiele was not released, but rather deported to the Buchenwald concentration camp. Here he allegedly died of poisoning on August 29, 1940 at the age of 33.

Honors

  • In 1950 Bertholdstrasse in Portitz was renamed Herbert-Thiele-Strasse .
  • In 1962 the Eutritzscher Feierabendheim was given the name Herbert-Thiele-Heim . Thiele's parents spent the last years of their lives there.
