Herman-Lucien de Cunsel (born January 19, 1907 in Brussels , † 1971 in Brussels) was a Belgian painter.

Life

Herman-Lucien de Cunsel's father was Lucien de Cunsel. On his mother's side he came from the Teirlinck family, his mother NN Teirlinck (around 1883–1911) died early, the father then married her sister Marie Marthe Teirlinck. De Cunsel's uncle was the Belgian writer, playwright and cultural politician Herman Louis César Teirlinck (1879–1967), whose daughter was married to Henry van de Velde . His father's family owned the Brussels furniture company Atelier Victor De Cunsel .

De Cunsel was self-taught . He initially devoted himself to "the surrealism of a veristic direction ... later de Cunsel found non-representational forms." He lived in Paris from 1947 to 1959 and in Cagnes-sur-Mer in 1960 , numerous trips took him to Berlin, Basel, Morocco and others South America.

His works can be seen in several public collections, e.g. B. the picture “Grande fugue II” (1951) in the Sprengel Museum Hannover

Two well-known private collectors of his works were the Lorca translator and writer Enrique Beck and the author and art collector Thea Sternheim , with whom André Gide introduced him and with whom he was a lifelong friend. De Cunsel was in contact with Klaus Sternheim , Mopsa Sternheim , Klaus Mann and Jean Schlumberger, among others .

He translated the play The Cassette by Carl Sternheim into French; the manuscript is now in the German Literature Archive in Marbach .

Individual evidence

  1. Thea Sternheim telegraphed him on January 19, 1947 for his 40th birthday according to the diary entry, cf. also: CD of the diaries 1903–1971 , (complete diaries as a database) 1932–1971; ed. by Thomas Ehrsam and Regula Wyss, production: Wallstein verlag GmbH; 1907 is thus verified as the year of birth and not 1908, as sometimes stated elsewhere
