Herman Raucher (born April 13, 1928 in Brooklyn , New York ) is an American writer and screenwriter who became internationally known for films such as Summer '42 , A College Love , The Seduction , Beyond Midnight and Sweet November .

life and career

Herman Raucher, born in Brooklyn in 1928 as the son of Benjamin Brooks Raucher and Sophie Weinshank, graduated from New York University with a BA in 1949 , first worked as a copywriter for 20th Century Fox from 1950 to 1954 , then for Walt Disney from 1954 to 1955 Company and from 1956 to 1957 with the advertising agency Calkins and Holden . He also began writing scripts for television series in Hollywood , including The Alcoa Hour and Goodyear Television Playhouse . From 1957 to 1963, Raucher served as vice president, creative director and member of the board of directors of McCluton Advertising in New York. From 1963 to 1964 he then worked as Vice President and Creative Director at Maxon , also in New York. Between 1964 and 1967 he held the same position at two other advertising agencies, namely at Gardner and finally at Benton & Bowles in New York. After that he worked exclusively in his preferred occupation as a freelance writer and screenwriter.

In 1968 he achieved the breakthrough with the screenplay for the cinema production Adieu, beloved November of director Robert Ellis Miller of a tragic romance. In 1969 he wrote the screenplay for Anthony Newley's musical The Desires of Hieronymus . For the director Melvin Van Peebles he provided the script for his comedy Watermelon Man in 1970 . In 1972, Raucher received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay for his work on Robert Mulligan's romantic drama Summer '42 . In the course of the 1970s, other scripts for films such as A College Love , The Seduction , Beyond Midnight , and The Great Santini were written . In the 1980s and 1990s he wrote only two scripts for the films Proini peripolos and Ode . In 2001, director Pat O'Connor directed the remake Sweet November, starring Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron, based on his 1968 screenplay .

Herman Raucher married Broadway dancer Mary Kathryn Martinet in 1960 and the couple have two children. Jacqueline Leigh and Jennifer Brooks.
