Herman Simm

Herman Simm (born May 29, 1947 in Suure-Jaani ) is a former Estonian government official. He was sentenced to a long prison term in February 2009 for espionage against NATO .

Life

From 2001 to 2006 he headed the security department of the Estonian Ministry of Defense and had access to secret documents and the encryption system Elcrodat , which is used in communications within NATO. From 2006 he worked as a consultant in the Ministry of the Interior. On September 21, 2008, he was arrested on suspicion of having passed on secret information to Russia , for whose secret service SWR Simm is said to have worked.

On February 25, 2009, Simm pleaded guilty to the Harju District Court . He was sentenced to twelve and a half years in prison and to pay the equivalent of 1.28 million euros in damages. On December 23, 2019, he was released early on parole.
