Hermann Baumgart

Hermann Baumgart (born May 24, 1843 in Elbing ; † June 8, 1926 in Königsberg ) was a German literary historian and rector of the University of Königsberg.

Life

After attending school in Elbing and a commercial apprenticeship that was broken off, Baumgart studied classical philology and history in Königsberg from 1861 to 1865. Since 1871 Baumgart has been teaching classical philology, German and history as a grammar school teacher at the Royal Friedrichs Collegium in Königsberg. In 1874 he received his doctorate in Leipzig and in 1877 he completed his habilitation in Königsberg. After teaching for three years as a private lecturer, Baumgart was appointed associate professor in 1880. From 1890 Baumgart was a full professor for modern German literary history in Königsberg. In the year of office 1897/98 he was elected rector of the University of Königsberg . In 1904 he was appointed secret councilor, and in 1919 Baumgart retired.
