Hermann Bock

Hermann Bock (born February 9, 1882 in Brno , † January 2, 1969 in Graz ) was an Austrian cave explorer.

biography

Hermann Bock began speleological and geological research in the Moravian Karst as a high school student. After graduating from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, he joined the Styrian state government in 1902.

In his second home, Styria, he found a connection to the “Styrian Cave Club” under A. Mayer sen. and was thus able to continue his research in an extended framework.

In 1907 Hermann Bock founded the "Association for Speleology in Graz" in Graz, which was expanded in 1911 to become the Association for Speleology in Austria , which eventually comprised numerous sections. Bock headed the association as chairman until it fell into disrepair after the First World War. Through the "Mitteilungen für Höhlenkunde" published from 1908 to 1919, the association gained significantly in importance. Hermann Bock has published numerous of his own works in this magazine and contributed to the design as an editorial member.

Bock threw himself into the exploration of the caves with extraordinary enthusiasm and his outstanding touristic, scientific and organizational achievements soon made him the most famous cave explorer. In 1908 and 1909 he was able to explore the Lur grotto from Semriach almost in its entire length. In 1910 and 1911 the discoveries in the Dachstein Cave Park and in the Totes Gebirge followed together with Georg Lahner , Alexander von Mörk and Rudolf Saar .

During the First World War, Hermann Bock was able to use his technical and speleological knowledge as the head of a “cave assembly” on the Italian front. In 1917 he was assigned to the "cave commission" for the search for cave phosphates in Styria, Moravia and Galicia. Hermann Bock was also employed as a civil engineer during the Second World War . T. as a major in defense geology.

After the Second World War, Hermann Bock resumed his speleological research. In 1951 he was appointed to the advisory board of the cave commission at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Vienna. In 1954 and 1955 he directed paleontological-prehistoric excavations of the Styrian State Museum "Joanneum" in various caves of the Central Styrian Karst.

In addition to numerous publications in daily newspapers, Hermann Bock has written around 50 specialist publications on karst hydrography , cave meteorology, paleozoology and archeology .
