life and work

Hermann Brühlmeyer was born as the youngest child of Martin and Frieda Brühlmeyer (née Auinger) and was baptized Protestant. His father, a building officer, was responsible for the expansion of the Passau Cathedral in a leading position. Inspired by his father, the young Hermann dealt with architectural photography from an early age .

From 1907 to 1910 he attended the Munich photography school , studied photography from 1907 to 1909 and graphics from 1909 to 1910. He then got a job with the kuk court photographer Kosel in Vienna . From 1913, Brühlmeyer headed the department for private assignments at the Austrian Photo Agency. With his wife Valerie (née Richter), a graduate of the Vienna Graphic Training and Research Institute , Brühlmeyer maintained a studio in Komzakgasse in Baden and from 1921 under the name H. u. V. Brühlmeyer one in Vienna.

The Brühlmeyer couple had two children, but they died at a young age. Due to her Jewish descent, Valerie Brühlmeyer faced great difficulties during the war years ; her mother died in the concentration camp. Valerie died shortly after the end of the war and Brühlmeyer married his former employee Maria Limburger in 1947.

In addition to the landscape photographs and photographs of Lower Austrian architecture, the Heiligenkreuzer works and portraits are particularly noteworthy, which depict numerous people of public interest. Brühlmeyer received numerous prizes for his work and was considered "one of the best photographers of his time".
