Life
Hermann Clemens Kosel grew up in Braunau and trained as a bookbinder with his father . From 1889 to 1891 he attended the graphic teaching and research institute in Vienna . Kosel began his photography activities between 1891 and 1905 as the studio manager of the amateur photographer Albert von Rothschild and gave wealthy amateurs lessons in photographic techniques. In 1905 he opened a rubber printing company and promoted this process for the Austrian manufacturer Langer. In his portrait studio, which opened in 1906, 23 employees were employed at times. Kosel won a well-off Viennese clientele and became a court photographer in 1911 . From 1905 to 1909 he was editor of the magazine "Photo-Sport".
Kosel was the editor of anthologies of contemporary literature and edited from 1892 to 1903 a. a. the literary papers "Iduna", "Deutsches Böhmerland" and the "Blätter für deutscheichtung". His own lyrics have been set to music several times. Kosel mainly wrote biographical novels. He also illustrated his books himself and also painted landscapes and portraits.
Since his son Hermann Kosel had to flee from the National Socialists after the annexation of Austria in 1938, he closed the studio in 1940 and sold the inventory. He was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .
