Hermann Christian Polster (born April 8, 1937 in Leipzig ) is a German opera singer ( bass ).

Life

The son of the concert singer and singing teacher Fritz Polster received his first training from his father. He was a member of the Dresden Kreuzchor . He received his first musicological training at the University of Leipzig from the musicologist Heinrich Besseler .

Polster began his solo career in Leipzig and soon became a valued Bach interpreter. He performed together with the St. Thomas' Choir , of which he was a singing teacher for many years, and made concert tours through Eastern and Western Europe. In addition to music from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods, he also sang modern works. He was also a valued song interpreter. His first operatic role was Lord Syndham in Lortzing's Zar und Zimmermann at the Leipzig Opera in 1966 . Since then he has appeared in many guest roles, such as Sarastro in the Magic Flute , as Pogner in the Meistersingern von Nürnberg or as Gremin in Eugen Onegin . The focus of his artistic activity, however, remained primarily oratorio singing.

Polster was awarded the title Kammersänger and was professor for singing at the Leipzig University of Music "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" . In 1978 he was awarded the Art Prize of the GDR , in 1985 the Handel Prize of the Halle district and in 1989 the National Prize of the GDR.

Today he devotes himself above all to the training and professional profiling of young singers with a focus on oratorio and art song . His educational success is based on extensive practical international singing and artistic experience and many years of educational activity.
