Hermann Ernst friend
Hermann Ernst Freund (born October 15, 1786 in Uthlede near Bremen, † June 30, 1840 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish sculptor .
Life
Freund attended the academy in Copenhagen and in 1820 went to Rome, where he joined Bertel Thorvaldsen's studio . Here he played an important role in the work for the Frauenkirche in Copenhagen , the Christ statue and the apostles.
But he also created some independent works: a Mercury, a shepherd girl who lets a lamb drink, etc. a. which, happily invented and not without delicacy, show him entirely as a pupil of Thorvaldsen.
In 1827 he returned to Copenhagen, where he developed a lively activity as a teacher and conductor of the art association. In 1836 he completed the monument to the reformer Hans Tausen in Viborg .
His main work was the Ragnarök frieze , which found a place in Christiansborg Palace in 1841 . It was a difficult task to embody the fantastic Nordic legend in which the figures only appear in fluctuating outlines. For this, Freund used the Thorwaldsen forms based on the Greco-Roman antiquity. But the composition had the merit of an energetic, dramatic effect. The frieze was destroyed in the castle fire in 1884.
His nephew and student Georg Christian Freund temporarily assisted at work. Freund died as a professor at the Copenhagen Academy .
