Hermann Ernst Rumpel

Hermann Ernst Rumpel (* 1734 in Erfurt ; † 1794 ibid) was a German lawyer , librarian , headmaster and university professor .

Life

His father Johann Georg Rumpel (1694-1773) came from Salzungen , had at the Erfurt University law student and was then Stadtsyndicus and director of the Academy of Sciences of Erfurt .

Hermann Ernst also studied law at the universities of Erfurt and Jena. In 1759 he received his doctorate as Dr. jur.

From 1758 to 1778 he was rector of the Evangelical Ratsgymnasium .

In 1759 he became a member of the Leopoldina and custodian of the Leopoldina library under Johann Hieronymus Kniphof . After Kniphof's death he became his successor as librarian, and in 1766 his brother Ludwig Friedrich Eusebius Rumpel became the new custodian .

In 1765 Hermann Ernst was appointed professor of law at the University of Erfurt, and in 1767 he became a full professor. In this function, he supervised Karl Wilhelm Nose's thesis in 1782 . In 1786 Karl Theodor von Dalberg commissioned him with an expert opinion on the Stotternheimer Saline for the extraction of rock salt , which was only carried out there from 1828.

After his death in 1794 he was buried in the Erfurt University Church of St. Michaelis . The tomb still exists today.
