Life

Winterhalter grew up in Menzenschwand with his eight siblings, only four of whom reached adulthood. His father Fidel Winterhalter (1773–1863) advised him from an early age to follow in the footsteps of his older brother Franz Xaver. Like his older brother, Winterhalter completed a four-year apprenticeship as a lithographer at the Herderschen Kunstinstitut in Freiburg . He later went to Munich and Rome to study there. In 1840 he finally settled in Paris , supported by his well-known brother, who also worked there. Although the brothers were similar in their work as well as in their personalities, there was no rivalry between them. Hermann Winterhalter even represented his brother in his Paris studio when he was on trips abroad. He was a great support to his brother's career. After the fall of the Second Empire , the brothers decided to retire in Karlsruhe. Franz Xaver died in 1873, Hermann not until almost twenty years later in 1891.
