Hermann Finke

Hermann Finke (born November 12, 1877 in Karlsruhe , † January 8, 1947 in Heidelberg ) was a German librarian and epigraphist .

Life

After graduating from high school in Karlsruhe in 1897, Finke studied Classical Philology and History at the University of Heidelberg. In 1904 he received his doctorate with Alfred von Domaszewski with a thesis on Ammianus Marcellinus . He has been working at the Heidelberg University Library since 1900 , initially as curator, since 1912 as librarian, since 1922 as senior librarian. In 1934 he was provisional director of the library, from 1935 he was deputy director, and from late 1945 until his death in 1947 he was again provisional director of the library and the university archive.

In the tradition of his teacher Domaszewski, he dealt scientifically with the inscriptions from the Germanic provinces of the Roman Empire and took care of the supplements to the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum Volume XIII. In January 1934 he was appointed full honorary professor for epigraphy and numismatics at the University of Heidelberg, and since the summer semester of 1935 he has held exercises in Greek and Latin epigraphy there. Finke was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .
