Hermann Geiger (clergyman)

Hermann Geiger (born March 14, 1827 in Schwabmünchen , † December 1, 1902 in Munich ) was a German clergyman , Roman Catholic theologian and author .

Life

Hermann Geiger studied theology in Munich and Bonn and was ordained a priest in Augsburg in 1850 and became a cooperator in Teisendorf, Rosenheim and Traunstein in 1860 . In 1863 he became an early messenger and religion teacher at the St. Ludwig Church in Munich , later a canon and curate priest in Munich.

Geiger was Commander of the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and Honorary Dome of the Patriarchal Church in Jerusalem. In 1865, together with Therese Freiin von Gumppenberg, mother of Cardinal Karl August von Reisach , he founded the Sionsverein in Munich, which supported church institutions in the Holy Land, especially for children and young people. From 1884 he personally organized and led 25 Bavarian pilgrim caravans to the Holy Land . From 1885 he was the editor of the pilgrim letters dealing with these pilgrimages, but the number of participants never exceeded 30 people.

For his commitment he was from Pope Leo XIII. honored with the title of papal secret chamberlain ( monsignor ) and with the papal honorary order Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice as well as with the beneficiary of St. Ludwig.

He was the author of the historical novels "Lydia: a picture from the time of Emperor Mark Aurel". and "Leander and Hermigild or The Rebirth of Spain".

On Geiger's preparatory work, Major General Heinrich Himmel von Agisburg (1843–1915) and Cathedral Chapter Sebastian Kirchberger (1846–1919) were able to build upon the Bavarian Pilgrimage Association of the Holy Land in Munich in 1903 and organized large Bavarian pilgrimages to Palestine according to the Austrian model first, with over 500 pilgrims, took place in July 1904.
