Hermann Granier

Hermann Granier (born December 8, 1857 in Breslau , † January 14, 1941 in Berlin ) was a German historian and archivist .

Life

As the son of a bookseller in Wroclaw, he initially decided to become an officer, but after eight years retired from military service for health reasons. He then completed a degree in history at the University of Berlin and was awarded a doctorate there in 1889. phil. PhD . In 1893 he started at the Secret State Archives (GStA) in Berlin as an archive volunteer, in 1895 as an archive assistant, and in 1898 he was hired as a royal archivist. In 1900 he moved to the State Archives in Breslau, but returned to the Secret State Archives in Berlin in 1903. From 1906 until his retirement in 1923 he worked as house archivist and secret archivist at the Royal House Archives in Charlottenburg . He mainly published and edited documents from the time of the Wars of Liberation and also wrote several résumés for the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie .

He was married to Charlotte Parthey. The marriage had four children, including Friedrich Granier (1893-1946), who was also the Prussian state archivist.

Hermann Granier's final resting place is in the south-west cemetery in Stahnsdorf .
