Hermann Haring

Hermann Häring (born July 7, 1937 in Pforzheim ) is a German theologian.

Life

Häring attended the Lender home school and then studied philosophy from 1958 to 1961 at the Jesuit college in Pullach in the Isar valley . From 1961 to 1964 school and pastoral activities followed in Neuhausen / Fildern. This was followed by studying Catholic theology at the University of Tübingen until 1968 . After receiving his doctorate in ecumenical theology (1970), Häring was a research assistant at the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Tübingen under the direction of Hans Küng . In 1978 he received his habilitation in dogmatic and ecumenical theology. In 1980 he received a professorship for Catholic systematic theology at the University of Nijmegen after the church authorities blocked appointments in the Federal Republic. In 1999 his chair was transformed into a professorship for philosophy of science and theology in view of a new study concept for the faculty . There he built up the interdisciplinary institute for theology, science and culture. He retired in 2005 . After his retirement he became a scientific advisor for Hans Küng's “ Global Ethic Project ”. At present he works mainly on questions of church reform and interreligious conversation.

Häring lived with his family at Kleve during his professional activity in Nijmegen until his retirement in 2005, then moved back to Tübingen . His brothers are the Catholic pastor Karl Häring (1933-2004) and the lawyer Georg Häring .

On September 3, 2013, extracts of a letter from Häring to the pastor of Limburg became known in which he massively criticized Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst .
