Hermann Christian Helms (born September 20, 1898 in Bremen , † February 23, 1983 in Munich ) was a German entrepreneur and chairman of the board of the German steamship company "Hansa" .

biography

Helms was the son of the shipowner Hermann Helms . He did a commercial apprenticeship in the tobacco trade. A longer activity abroad followed.

In 1922 he took on a managerial position at his father's German steamship company "Hansa" (DDG "Hansa"). In the 1920s he was repeatedly the engine of the company. In 1929 he became a member of the Hansa board and in 1940 chairman of the board. After the global economic crisis of 1928/30, in which some ships had to be laid up, the Hansa rose to become the world's largest heavy lift shipping company . In 1939 53 ships sailed under the Hansa flag.

After the Second World War and the loss of all ships, he managed the shipping company until 1969. His successor was his son of the same name, Hermann Helms . He then switched to the supervisory board. The Hanse began tramping with two larger ships in 1950 . In 1951 the regular service started again. In 1956 the Hansa fleet again had 44 ships and in the 1960s it finally had 56 ships. But he also had to witness the bankruptcy of Hansa in 1980 .

Helms is said to have been (?) President of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce . He was a member of the board of the Friends of the Kunsthalle Bremen . He was also chairman of the German Society for Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) and active in equestrian sports in Bremen.
