Hermann Hoffmann (theologian)

Hermann Hoffmann (born July 14, 1878 in Glogau , † February 12, 1972 in Leipzig ) was a German Roman Catholic priest and theologian .

Life

From 1908 to 1927 he was a teacher at the Matthias Gymnasium in Breslau . He got involved with the Catholic youth movement in Silesia and became one of the founders of the Quickborn working group . During the First World War he worked as a volunteer military chaplain in France and returned as a pacifist. He joined the International Union of Reconciliation and thereby became one of the first Catholic representatives in the early ecumenical movement . Later he was also a member of the Peace Association of German Catholics .

From 1927 to 1948 he was a priest in Breslau. As a historian, he dealt with the Silesian Jesuit colleges and founded the journal Archive for Silesian Church History . During the Nazi era, he campaigned for Jews. From 1948 to 1972 he was a pastor in Leipzig . The University of Würzburg awarded him an honorary theological doctorate in 1958 .
