Hermann Lindner (painter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann Lindner (born July 11, 1934 in Leipzig ; † November 9, 2000 in Stralsund ) was a German painter and graphic artist. Shortly before his death, he formulated his self-imposed task with “overcoming the naturalistic towards form”.

Life

Growing up in Stralsund , he first completed an apprenticeship as a painter in his father's company, followed by a master's degree. In 1953 he went to the College of Applied Arts in Heiligendamm and from there to the Stuttgart Art Academy in 1956 . The painter Manfred Henninger became his decisive teacher . In addition to his way of working from experiencing nature, he dealt with Willi Baumeister's concepts , which led him to an intensive examination of the elementary means of art. The great French of the century were also particularly stimulating: Paul Cézanne , Henri Matisse , Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso . As a student, he had to take over the painting business at the family's request as early as 1957 because of the sudden death of his father. The attempt to continue his studies four years later failed after he and his future wife were arrested while trying to escape on the inner-German border. This was followed by two years imprisonment in the state security prison in Magdeburg , then the return to Stralsund and the withdrawal of the business license. In 1964 he married Gerlind Lange. He succeeded in being accepted into the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR , the basis of a freelance existence as a painter and graphic artist in the GDR. After the birth of two sons, he kept the family afloat with restoration work.

In 1976 he took part in a plein air in Bulgaria and developed his expressive, at the same time strongly reducing formal language in front of nature, which he continued to develop until the end of his life. Since 1980 he has repeatedly received orders for glass window designs.

In 1989, in the midst of the euphoric turnaround , the wife died. After various trips all over Europe, he began to convert his old town house into a house of art in the early 1990s. The "HanseGalerie" moved in. However, the project was interrupted by serious illnesses. In 1998 he had to undergo a heart transplant. Shortly before his death, he was able to complete one last commission, the large panels for the four seasons.

The catalog raisonné between 1955 and 2000 includes around 1200 paintings, graphics and drawings. There are also works in public space: large-format wall paintings in Stralsund, Rostock and Grimmen, glass windows in a youth center in Stralsund and in churches in Torgelow, Krummin, Peenemünde, Calberlah and Dörverden.
