Hermann Osthoff (Linguist)
Hermann Osthoff (born April 18, 1847 in Billmerich near Unna ; † May 7, 1909 in Heidelberg ) was a German linguist .
Life
Osthoff studied classical philology , German , Sanskrit and comparative linguistics in Berlin , Tübingen and Bonn . In 1869 he received his doctorate in Bonn. During his time in Bonn he became a member of the Alemannia Bonn fraternity . From 1870 he worked as a teacher in Kassel . In 1875 he completed his habilitation in Leipzig . In 1877 he became associate professor of comparative linguistics and Sanskrit in Heidelberg . In 1878 he was appointed full professor there. In 1879 his son was born, the later painter Hermann Osthoff .
His research focus was Indo-European studies . In addition to Karl Brugmann and August Leskien , Osthoff was one of the main founders of the young grammarians .
