Hermann Otto
Hermann Waldemar Otto (born April 14, 1863 in Hohenstein ; † January 11, 1941 in Düsseldorf ) was a German writer, journalist, artist and mining entrepreneur. As an author, he mostly used the pseudonym Signor Saltarino .
Life
Otto began a commercial apprenticeship, which he broke off, and went hiking from 1879. After stays in Leipzig and Magdeburg, he moved to Bohemia, where he joined a comedy troupe. Later Otto joined the traveling circuses Warge, Gebrüder Blumenfeld and Althoff as an art rider and performed in Germany, Eastern and Southeastern Europe.
In addition to his artistic activity, Otto was also active as a writer and wrote short stories, novels and historical descriptions. In 1886 he got a job in Düsseldorf with the magazine Der Artist ; later he became its chief editor.
He remained very attached to his hometown. After the decline of mining in Hohenstein, he was committed to its revitalization. He was able in 1914 the Munich chemist Paul von Gans for a presumption win the disused arsenic, lead and copper mine Lampertus. When Gans died the following year, Otto took over the mining rights himself and was able to win the Charlottenburg factory owner Baldus as a partner. The recovery and investigation work started after the end of the war and stopped again in 1920 after the death of the partner. Further attempts to find financially strong partners for the colliery failed, as did a lease to a mining company. Otto's financial resources were exhausted and his mining rights were revoked in 1926.
He gained fame through the artist's lexicon , which appeared in several editions under the pseudonym Signor Saltarino . He published other writings as Hermann Waldemar Otto and Waldemar Hohenthal . In bourgeois life he always drew as Hermann Otto . After his death Otto's urn was transferred to Hohenstein-Ernstthal in accordance with his last wish and buried there.
