Hermann Pröscholdt

Hermann Pröscholdt (also Hermann Proescholdt , born April 8, 1852 in Saalfeld , † 1898 in Meiningen ) was a German teacher, geologist and paleontologist .

Life

Hermann Pröscholdt attended secondary schools in Saalfeld and Meiningen and then studied mathematics and natural sciences at the universities of Leipzig and Vienna. He became assistant to the Austrian geologist Eduard Suess and also worked as a teacher at a private secondary school. From December 1, 1875 to November 8, 1895 he was a teacher and, most recently, senior teacher with Hermann Friedrich Emmrich at the Meiningen Realschule , later the Ducal Realgymnasium in Meiningen. As a member of the geological survey, he researched the Triassic in Thuringia and made important contributions to local stratigraphy. He edited u. a. the sheets Haina, Heiligenstadt, Hildburghausen, Küllstedt, Rentwertshausen and Themar of the geological map of Prussia and neighboring states.

He is the first to describe the brachiopod Aulacothyris ostheimensis (PRÖSCHOLDT 1879).

Pröscholdt was a member of the German Geological Society and in 1889 a founding member and the first chairman of a Meiningen section of the then German and Austrian Alpine Association (DuÖAV or DÖAV).
