Hermann Reuter (born June 20, 1880 in Siegen , † January 11, 1970 in Düsseldorf ) was a German librarian and dialect researcher . From 1928 to 1950 he was director of the State and City Library in Düsseldorf .

family

Hermann Reuter was born as the son of the Siegen confectioner Jakob Reuter (1838–1909) and his wife Wilhelmine geb. Melsbach (1843–1918) born. He had four siblings: Berta (* 1872), Hanna (* 1874), Elise (* 1876), Ernst (* 1882) and was not married.

Career

After graduating in Siegen, Reuter studied German, English and Romance studies in Bonn and later in Freiburg from 1899. There he received his doctorate in 1903 under the Germanist Friedrich Kluge on the subject of contributions to the phonology of the Siegerland dialect for Dr. phil. During his studies in 1899 he became a member of the Alemannia Bonn fraternity . He passed the state examination for higher teaching qualifications - in the main subjects German, English and French - in 1905 in Karlsruhe. In May 1904, Reuter became a two-year trainee at the Freiburg University Library and from April 1, 1906, he took on an unskilled position at the State and City Library in Düsseldorf. After just one year he was appointed librarian and from then on worked in the academic service. When Constantin Nörrenberg left in 1928, Hermann Reuter took over the management of the library, which he held until 1950.

In addition, he devoted himself to linguistic research, particularly on the dialect of his homeland in Siegerland . Together with his former high school teacher Jacob Heinzerling in Siegen , he wrote the Siegerland dictionary between 1932 and 1938 . Through personal contact with Prince August zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein , Reuter arranged for the Heine collection to be relocated from the Düsseldorf State and City Library, threatened by the war, to the chapel of Wittgenstein Castle . There she was picked up again in February 1947 on the instructions of the English military government, Dept. Fine Arts , and brought back to Düsseldorf.

Hermann Reuter was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit (1st class) on April 5, 1957, among other things for the rescue of the Heinrich Heine Archive in the Third Reich . His estate is in the University and State Library in Düsseldorf.
