Hermann Rudolf Meyer (born January 8, 1902 in Bremen , † July 4, 1979 in Bremen) was a newspaper publisher ( Weser-Kurier ).

biography

Hermann Rudolf Meyer was a businessman who sold typewriters and calculating machines before 1945. In 1945 he worked in the publishing management when the Weser-Kurier (WK) was founded. Together with the newspaper founder Hans Hackmack , he built up the newspaper. On September 6, 1949 he became managing director and publishing director. When in 1952 the license holder Felix von Eckardt took over the management of the press and information office of the federal government in Bonn, he sold his shares in the publishing house to Meyer. In 1956 Meyer von Hackmack took over further shares in the publishing house, so that both had an equal stake and both were managing directors with equal rights. Meyer however increasingly took over the actual management of the publishing house, since Hackmack was ailing. Hackmack left the publishing house in 1960 and Meyer ran the publishing house alone as managing director. Hermann Rudolf Meyer negotiated the takeover of the Wümme-Zeitung in Lilienthal and negotiated a cooperation with the Saade publishing family from Osterholz-Scharmbeck. Since 1971, the Osterholzer Kreisblatt has therefore been majority owned by WESER-KURIER. In 1974, under his leadership, the publishing house bought the newspaper Bremer Nachrichten (BN) and was thus a newspaper monopoly in Bremen. With the takeover, the daily newspaper for Bremen-Nord, Schwanewede and Lemwerder also came to WESER-KURIER. Thanks to his commercial skill and perseverance, the WESER-KURIER publishing house developed into one of the most successful regional publishers in Germany. Hermann Rudolf Meyer no longer experienced this success himself, but his successors in the publishing house management were able to reap what he sown.

Through a sometimes rigorous entrepreneurial policy, he caused a three-week strike in 1977 . Tariff increases were offset against the voluntary allowances. A "wild" strike by the editors led to lockouts and industrial action. At that time the much-quoted word was used: “ Remember, my laws are called Meyer. “Through a joint editorial director, he began to bring the two newspapers WK and BN together more and more.

A grandson of Hermann Rudolf Meyer now holds 50% of the shares in the publishing house and sits on the supervisory board of Bremer Tageszeitungen AG .
