history

The Wümme newspaper was founded on May 17, 1879 as an "independent local paper " for Lilienthal and the surrounding area. It was spread from Ostersode to Oberneuland and from Ritterhude to Wilstedt .

Beginning

Before JC Meister founded the Wümme-Zeitung , he had headed the Vegesack weekly in Osterholz-Scharmbeck , which later became the Norddeutsche Volkszeitung . The desire for an “independent and independent local paper” had grown louder and the new newspaper for the region between Wümme and Hamme was founded. The company was based in Lilienthal, in an outbuilding of the Stadtlander estate at the end of the Arpsdamm. In 1886 the company moved to the new publishing house at Hauptstrasse 46. When Meister died in 1889, his widow Margarethe Katharina took over the management of the company. After her death, long-time operations manager Heinrich Schwalenberg became a publisher. Together with the founding son Christel Meister, Schwalenberg founded the OHG JC Meister in 1913 , which was then continued by the other heirs. The Wümme newspaper was printed on the publisher's own press at Hauptstrasse 46 in Lilienthal until 1968.

post war period

The Wümme-Zeitung was not allowed to appear from 1945 to 1949 . On July 1, 1949, the first edition after the Second World War was published under the publishing direction of Hans Schwalenberg. From 1949 to 1974, Fritz Gagelmann was the editor in charge of the Wümme newspaper . For many years Gagelmann († 1974) was chairman of the Lilienthaler Heimatverein.

From September 1, 1949 it appeared with the upper title "Niederdeutsche Zeitung". This newspaper, which also appeared in Achim / Verden and Zeven / Bremervörde, had a license and provided the cover - the supraregional part. The publisher was again allowed to report from Lilienthal and the surrounding area. When the license was compulsory, WÜMME-ZEITUNG appeared again for the first time on Monday, September 26th. The editorial community with the Niederdeutsche Zeitung was retained and expanded on October 1, 1951 to form the newspaper ring “Rund um Bremen”. In this way it was also possible for small newspapers to report from the entire vicinity. That was appreciated by the readers. These included the Mayor of Bremen, Wilhelm Kaisen, who lived in Borgfeld and, in 1954, on the 75th anniversary, congratulated, as did Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Hinrich-Wilhelm Kopf. Two closely spaced pages of congratulations followed; that of Alfred Faust, press spokesman for the Bremen Senate, was titled “Das Weltblatt im Teufelsmoor”.

In 1974 the Wümme newspaper was sold to the Bremer Tageszeitungen AG . On August 5th, the last issue before the takeover was published with the last newspaper novel - “The children from Teufelsmoor” by the Aumund teacher and author Werner Schrader. From August 6, 1974 the WÜMME-ZEITUNG is a regional edition of the WESER-KURIER, since October 15, 1974 its title has been set in Antiqua instead of Fraktur.

Since the takeover by the Weser-Kurier , the Wümme-Zeitung has been published as a regional edition of the Weser-Kurier and the Bremer Nachrichten for the communities of Lilienthal, Worpswede, Grasberg, Tarmstedt and the districts of Bremen-Borgfeld and Bremen-Blockland.
