Hermann Schäfer (composer, 1911)

Hermann Schäfer ( pseudonym : Tom Glady ; born October 29, 1911 in Düsseldorf ; † August 10, 1977 in Alzenau ) was a German composer , arranger, conductor and orchestra leader.

Life

At the age of seven, Hermann Schäfer received organ and piano lessons and played the accompaniment to silent films with his father, who was also a musician. He studied at the music academies in Cologne and Berlin and graduated as an orchestra conductor in 1937. He gained musical experience as 1st oboist with the Berliner Philharmoniker under the direction of Wilhelm Furtwängler .

During the Second World War Schäfer was master musician and was u. a. employed as listening officer on the battleships Admiral Graf Spee and Gneisenau .

After the war Hermann Schäfer was music director at the city theaters in Schleswig and Kiel .

In 1955 he founded the large wind orchestra "The Vikings". A number of naval, horseman and army marches and marching songs were rearranged under the direction of Hermann Schäfer and produced on shellac and later edited for download without losing the typical shellac sound. The large wind orchestra was supported by a male choir from the Kiel City Theater.

The then Defense Minister Franz Josef Strauss commissioned Hermann Schäfer in 1957 to set up the North Sea and Baltic Sea Marine Music Corps . Many concerts and tours followed with the Baltic Sea Marine Music Corps. In 1963 he moved to Bavaria and dedicated himself to promoting club music. He left behind marches , overtures , polkas , tangos and hits .
