Hermann Silwedel

Hermann Gustav Silwedel (born March 19, 1877 in Hohenwalde, Landsberg district (Warthe) , today Wysoka , municipality Lubiszyn , Lubuszyn Voivodeship , Poland ; † May 10, 1936 in Landsberg an der Warthe, today Gorzów Wielkopolski ) was a German composer and music publisher .

Life

At 16 he moved to Landsberg an der Warthe. In 1900, after completing his musical training, Silwedel founded a music publishing house with a print shop ("Hermann Silwedel - Musikalien-Verlag und Druckerei") in Landsberg an der Warthe. In addition to his own works for orchestra, band and chamber music, he also publishes works by other composers.

Hermann Silwedel was a so-called "home composer" and therefore initially only known regionally, later also nationally. He lived in Zechowerstrasse. 23 (today: Ulica Warszawska 89).

In 1901 he married Clara Augusta Mittelstädt. From this connection the sons Carl Hermann, Gerhard Gustav, Kurt Julius and Joachim emerged. The latter died at the age of 15.

It is unclear whether Silwedel was a member of the NSDAP . What is certain is that the National Socialists used the marches he composed for large performances. He himself - if you follow the Landsberger March album - was the conductor . In this context he concentrated more on the composition of marches, that is, brass music. Previously he had mainly composed string music. These were very well received by the supporters of the National Socialists.

The proximity to the NSDAP leaves no doubt when you look at the “Landsberger Marschalbum” ( Unser Göring , An Adolf Hitler's German Youth , SA marches! ). It has not yet been clarified whether his marches were renamed and given NDSDAP names or whether he composed them additionally.

It is also known that Hermann Silwedel was the publisher of the composer and policeman Carl Teike :

“[...] In search of new, equally promising melodies, the Berlin music publisher Erwin Dowe came across an old, unknown score in March of this year. Policeman Teike had labeled the sheet music without a title in October 1918 and entrusted it to his publisher Hermann Silwedel. He left it in the drawer - 'probably to wait for more marching times after the lost war' (Philips record producer Theo Knobel ) - and bequeathed it to his son Gerhard Silwedel . Dowe bought the manuscript from him for 500 marks. Dowe was hardly in possession of the paper that was supposed to secure a share in the new march bull market for him on the music exchange, when he transferred the first publication rights for records to the march-specialized producer Knobel [...] "
