Carl Teike (born February 5, 1864 in Altdamm ; † May 28, 1922 in Landsberg an der Warthe ; full name Carl Albert Hermann Teike ) was a German military musician and composer . Among other things, he composed the popular march Alte Kameraden .

Life and accomplishments

Teike was born the son of a master blacksmith in Altdamm near Stettin . At the age of 14 he came to the Stadtkapellmeister von Wollin , Paul Böttcher , where he learned to play various wind instruments and performed in the Böttcher ensemble for four years, including in the seaside resort of Misdroy . From 1883 he became an oboist in the grenadier regiment "King Karl" (5th Württembergisches) No. 123 in Ulm , where he composed his first marches, of which Alte Kameraden is the best known. At the end of his military service, he was first employed by the Ulm city police, then after 1895 as a police officer in Potsdam . Due to illness, he was no longer able to serve as a police officer, and in 1909 he became a civil servant (district office assistant) in Landsberg an der Warthe . In addition to the Marsch Alte Kameraden , he composed more than 100 pieces of music, including the marches In Treue fest , Graf Zeppelin and Treue um Treue , and a number of dances.

His first fee for old comrades was 20 marks and “a goose”. The assignment of rights earned him 50 marks. The fees for the sales of his other works were similar, so that despite his musical creativity he could not achieve any prosperity and was buried in a poor grave after his death in 1922 .

A memorial plaque attached to the former house in today's Gorzów Wielkopolski has been commemorating the composer since 2007 .
