Life
Hermann Sohn was born in Esslingen-Mettingen in 1895 as the son of a wine grower. After leaving school he completed an apprenticeship as a lithographer at the Esslinger Schreiber-Verlag . From 1911 to 1913 he studied at the Kgl. Stuttgart School of Applied Arts with Bernhard Pankok . He then worked as a commercial artist. Seriously wounded during the First World War, he was dismissed from military service as an invalid in 1916. From 1918 to 1922 he studied painting at the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Arts with Christian Speyer , Christian Landenberger , Adolf Hölzel , Arnold Waldschmidt and Heinrich Altherr. There he met Willi Baumeister and Oskar Schlemmer . After Cubist and Constructivist beginnings, he turned to Expressionism under the influence of Altherr. In 1923 he became a member of the Stuttgart Secession. In 1925 a scholarship enabled him to study for two years in Berlin, where he was supported by the art dealer Alfred Flechtheim. After the National Socialists came to power in 1937, a work and exhibition ban was imposed on him. After the war ended in 1946 he was appointed professor of painting at the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Arts, where he worked until 1962. After his retirement he lived as a freelance artist in Esslingen am Neckar.
