Johann Julius Hermann Spirgatis (born November 28, 1822 in Königsberg i. Pr. , † November 5, 1899 ibid) was a pharmaceutical chemist and university professor.

Life

As the son of a pharmacist, Spirgatis began to study at the Albertus University in Königsberg . In 1843 he joined the Corpsland Team Normannia , which later awarded him honorary membership. He moved to the Hessian Ludwig University , where Justus von Liebig gained special significance for him. Via the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , he came to the University of Jena , which made him a Dr. phil. PhD. He returned to Königsberg and set up scientific teaching courses for pharmacists. He completed his habilitation in chemistry in 1855 and became a private lecturer . In 1860 he was given the chair for pharmaceutical chemistry at the Albertina .

Spirgatis made significant contributions to the reorganization of pharmacy teaching in Königsberg and influenced the training of the East and West Prussian pharmacy class to a high degree. He founded a pharmaceutical-chemical laboratory with his own resources and thus filled a gap in Königsberg's scientific teaching system. In the journal for practical chemistry , in Justus Liebig's annals of chemistry , in the program documents of the University of Königsberg and in the reports of the Munich Academy of Sciences , Spirgatis published many articles on scientific and technical chemistry. They concern u. a. the analysis of the alloys of copper and zinc , the constitution of the scammonium resin, the scammonium, the milk of sulfur, the turpeth resin, the occurrence of arsenic in ancient bronze , the resin of Japomaea simulans, fossil resins and the identity of the so-called immature amber with krantzite . His instructions for qualitative chemical analysis appeared in several editions.

Spirgatis was not a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . He is on the list of candidates for admission to the Academy from 1887, but was not elected a member.
