Hermann Sternberg
Hermann Sternberg (born December 27, 1825 in Aachen , † July 18, 1885 in Karlsruhe ) was a German civil engineer. He was a senior building officer and professor at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic .
At the Polytechnic he taught hydraulic engineering and road construction and especially bridge construction as a full professor from 1861 to 1885. Sternberg used basic elements of the theory of the elastic arch when designing the Rhine bridge in Koblenz, completed in 1864, on the Koblenz-Lahnstein railway line. In 1866/67 and 1875/76 he was rector of the Polytechnic.
His students included Hermann Zimmermann , Friedrich Engesser , Reinhold Krohn , and August Föppl .
A street in Karlsruhe is named after him, Sternbergstrasse, located between Rintheimer Strasse and Gerwigstrasse.
